Blending Magick Oils | 31-07-16

In many pagan and witchcraft practises, oils are essential (see what I did there?) in ceremonies, rites and spells; they can also be used to anoint yourself and objects such as jewellery.
Our ancestors used oils all those years ago and thankfully, many of the same essential oils they used are still around today, enabling us to craft and create our own blends and oils too. In those days, fats were burned over flame and during the heating process herbs and flowers were added. Nowadays, the essential oils can manufactured and sold to us at what is a fraction of the price of essential oils, but when it comes to using them for magickal purposes, it is best to use authentic, natural essential oils (the ones extracted from plants). The synthesized versions of the oils, though cheaper, do not contain the magickal properties of the pure oils.

A lot of people who sell oils may lead you to believe that there’s a secret to blending oils that is exclusive only to those who do it commercially. Well, let me tell you that that, is not true at all. It’s quite a simple thing to do, actually and I find that this sort of thing is relaxing, perhaps it’s the aromas that make me feel so laid back. Who knows?
Anyway, here’s how to blend and brew oils:

Firstly you need to determine what you’re intending on using said blend for. Do you want to be brought prosperity? A wealth or money oil could do just that.

Once you’re sure of your intent, you need to gather or assemble all of the oils needed for the blend and find a clean container. You then need to add 1/8 of a cup (2 tbsp) of your chosen base oil. A base oil should be one of the following list:

  • Safflower
  • Grapeseed
  • Jojoba
  • Sunflower
  • Almond

Sometimes, an oil measurement may be written as ‘drams’ this is a term used in apothecary and simply means a weight equal to an eighth of an ounce, or 3.8 grams – it’s an old term.

I like to use almond oil in my blends because it smells amazing.

Now you need to add the other oils necessary in your recipe, to your base oils. When you do this, be sure to use a pipette (or eyedropper) to do so as the recommended amounts are usually drops and you need to follow the proportions as closely as physically possible.
To mix and well, blend the oils you don’t stir them. Instead, swirl the container in a clockwise direction and the oils will combine. When you’re swishing and swirling your blend, make sure you’re not in an area that’s too heated or too moist.
Once the combination is complete, store them in dark coloured bottles, e.g., amber or dark green coloured vials. This will help protect them if they were to be left in sunlight – which it shouldn’t be. Always label your bottles/jars/vials and use them within 6-ish months of blending.
If you’re the creative type, you can age the labels and make them look pretty. Just make sure they’re readable and correct when you put them on the storage jars.

As I mentioned before, oils can be used for a number of things in a ritualistic setting. I never mentioned this, but I should as I’m trying to be as accurate as possible and you know, it’s quite important, but oils can be rubbed onto candles and they can be infused into the wax if you make or plan on making your own. This is for use during spellwork mostly and it fuses the energies of the oils with the energy of the candle’s flame and the magick symbolized by the candle’s colouring.

Another application of oils that I briefly mentioned is anointment. When brewing and blending oils to use on flesh, take every precaution to ensure that you don’t use any irritants in the blend (I know that’s probably obvious but I threw it in there anyway). If you have sensitive skin, there are some essential oils that will cause inflammation and/or soreness and these should be used prudently.
When oils are applied to the body, the wearer takes on the energies of the oil. For example, a Courage Oil will give you courage when you face difficulty or adversity.

An again, as aforementioned, items can be anointed with your choice of magickal oil. For example, crystals and amulets or talismans can be be turned from banal, everyday items into one of magickal power and energy.

If you are to blend an oil soon, good luck!
